43 Fragmenten einer Chronologie des Zufalls of Velden of wegen is an artists' book by Stijn Verhoeff

artists' book

2004

Looking back to this book now, it is one of the first results of an interdisciplinary interest and practice. For a few months at the department Beeldende Kunst at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, which can be described as learning how to become an autodidact, I freely wandered around, making poems, drawings, an outdoor installation and I wrote a short story. All around some loose ideas of acceleration and progress in relationship with nature. This book is the result of that period.

The first part of the title is borrowed from Michael Haneke’s film 71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls, which allowed me to bring the fragmented forms together. The second part Velden of wegen refers to the nature/culture divide, a topic that has appeared in many other works since, though never (yet) coming to clear-cut conclusions.
